Acid base abnormality
Acid-base abnormalities occur when the body’s balance between acids and bases is disrupted, leading to conditions such as acidosis or alkalosis. These imbalances can result from issues with the lungs, kidneys, or metabolic processes. Acidosis happens when there is too much acid or too little base in the body, often due to kidney disease, uncontrolled diabetes, or respiratory problems. Alkalosis, on the other hand, occurs when there is too much base or too little acid, and may result from prolonged vomiting, dehydration, or overuse of diuretics. Symptoms can include confusion, fatigue, shortness of breath, muscle twitching, or irregular heartbeat. Proper diagnosis through blood tests and addressing the underlying cause are key to restoring the body’s acid-base balance and preventing serious complications.
